Keep It Up

Welcome to QAHC’s web page for regional LGBT Queenslanders and especially gay men. Queensland is the only state of Australia where living outside our capital city (Brisbane) makes us the majority and not the minority! Unfortunately if you find yourself attracted to a member of the same sex in regional Queensland you are no longer in the majority and research tells us that regional Queensland can be a homophobic place to live. It has other advantages; you are not alone living here and we say to you Keep it up!

We hope this page will help you think of ways you can look after yourself and maintain or improve the good health behaviours we know most of you are achieving. We are in the process of developing this page and some resources that talk about living in regional Queensland and not accepting the labels that some people attach to us. Rather, living the life we choose and making the friends and service connections we want that allow us to live life to the fullest. After all, it's not the labels that matter... It's our health!

In developing the booklet and posters that support this page we were conscious of the need most of us have for supportive friendships, access to good (and understanding) health care services, and the need to maintain and improve or own health behaviours. We know that neither distance, nor the bush, holds back HIV and other health issues often thought of as city (or ghetto) conditions.

If you would like a copy of the booklet you can download a PDF here or we can send you a hard copy by e-mailing us at info@qahc.org.au or calling the men’s sexual health line on 1300 155 141. The booklet contains some of the same information found in this page but for individual help or support you should contact the QAHC worker with responsibility for your area. We have workers across the east coast of Queensland and if you need help in other regions you should contact the Brisbane office.
