PASH - Pleasure and Sexual HealthA new survey into gay and bisexual men's sex lives is due to be launched in Brisbane this month. The PASH Study (Pleasure and Sexual Health) is a joint initiative of The University of New south Wales, Curtin University and La Trobe University. Dr Pol McCann from UNSW explain the role of pleasure in the research: "So far, most research into how guys have sex has focused on the risk - what can go wrong, what long term consequences can be. But we don't really approach sex thinking negatively. Our main motivation is PLEASURE. So the PASH Study is looking at how pleasure affects how we negotiate what we do. Most men play safe most of the time, but some make decisions based on how they feel in different situations." The study has already launched in SA and WA and results are coming in. Some face-to-face interviews will be conducted in Brisbane, although the main part of the research will be internet-based. This, according to McCann, is an exciting development in sexual behaviour research, as it allows men from all over the country, not just the Eastern States, to contribute. "Research has little value if it is concentrated in Sydney. We need to hear from guys in Perth, Katherine, Brisbane, Port Augusta, Mt Isa, and in remote areas where they can connect through the net. This is a great chance for men to help their community by sharing knowledge." The survey takes about 30-40 minutes, is open to all men in Australia aged over 18, and is available at www.pash-study.net It asks about what men have done with sexual partners, and what their favorite sexual activities are. Examining the relationship between what men do and what they say they WANT to do holds valuable information about how men in Australia are making decisions about sex.
